In the past few years, Brasov has attracted significant foreign investment. INA Schaeffler, a German company making sub-assemblies for the automotive industry opened a ball bearing factory. The first 17500sqm factory was built under a €50 million investment and later in 2007, when the plant will be fully operational with a factory area totaling 52,000 sqm, the investment will reach €180 million.
Swedish company Autoliv, Germany's Reinert, Hungarian-based Klitehnima and German group Stabilus have announced the construction of plants in Brasov, with the projected investments exceeding €80 million. Metallic construction company Canam Steel (Canada), pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline and Kraft Foods have also invested in the city.
In 2006 it was announced that a new airport will be built outside Brasov in the Ghimbav region. The investment is estimated at €85 million and is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2009. A Canadian company, Intelcan Technosystems will operate the airport, which will have a capacity for one million passengers. The location of the airport was chosen due to the growing level of inward investment and business in the region of Brasov.
